Want a Great Party? Treasure Your Guests
One key to hosting a magical party is to make guests feel treasured. This is not only the
right thing to do, it will energize your party because people in a happy, playful mood are fun and they’re
capable of doing all kinds of spontaneous cool things that will make your party feel exuberant, more like
a “happening” than just another get-together.
The most successful hosts don’t try to “script” excitement. They make guests feel comfortable, cared for
and inspired…thus creating conditions where exciting things can happen on their own. This means:
- Anticipating guests’ needs for special foods, babysitting, etc.
- Providing “ice-breakers” at tables where strangers are sitting together.
- Avoiding any hint that you like some people better than others (e.g., it’s okay to have a
candle-lighting for family only, but don’t honor some friends and not others).
- Planning party activities that will be fun for everyone, not just the extroverts.
- Getting up at some point and telling everyone how much their friendship means to you.
A Sample Ice-Breaker That Really Works!
Every host finishes the seating plan with a number of guests who don’t fit with any other group and
these people – total strangers to each other – always get seated together. To ease their discomfort,
I made a joke out of it by putting
these cards on those tables. Did it work? I guess so: some people
got so friendly they now get together and don’t invite me!
